The idyllic village of Goseck in the Saale-Unstrut region was formerly known by most people, if at all, for its beautiful castle. This was to change in 1991, when archaeologists working with aerial photographs discovered a solar observatory.
This ring-ditch site dates back 7,000 years, making it the oldest known observatory in Europe. Its excavation and reconstruction drew attention to Goseck from far beyond the region.
Since the end of 2005, the solar observatory has been open to curious visitors, inviting them to take a journey into the past. In the nearby castle they can view an attractive exhibition on this impressive archaeological find.
Guided tours are offered on Sundays and holidays at 2:30 p.m.
